An employer must generally withhold federal income taxes, withhold & pay social security & Medicare taxes & pay unemployment tax on wages paid to an employee.
An employer generally does not have to withhold or pay any taxes on payments to independent contractors. This is why it is up to you to report your wages at the end of each year as this information is not in the IRS's database.
Pay varies depending on the company & can be anywhere from $7 per hour to $15 per hour on average. You can contact the companies directly regarding their specific pay structure & in many cases that information is posted on their websites.

Very few companies require a fee for background checks. For the ones that do, the fees vary & are usually under $50.
The background check is to make sure applicants do not have a criminal history if the job requires you to deal with customers personal information. Other than that they DO NOT charge anything to work with them.

Generally the companies have 24 hours worth of schedule each day to choose from. As an independent contractor you set your own schedule. As an employee you have to choose from their preset schedules.
Depending on the company, agents are usually paid either weekly or bi-weekly and checks are sent via direct deposit and/or by mail.
Basic computer & internet skills are required plus adequate typing speed & proper phone etiquette. Prior experience will better your chances of landing a job that requires past experience but online training is also available.
As with any job out there, these companies are not always hiring but they do however, hire more frequently because the masses do not know about these jobs, so they have more of a need to fill their available spots.
